Canadians have neglected to cash around $2 billion in funds by failing to redeem millions of paper cheques sent by federal government agencies. Recent documents disclosed in Parliament indicate that over the past four years, Ottawa dispatched 3.9 million paper cheques to Canadians that remained uncashed. Among these were $141 million in cheques designated for the Canada Carbon Rebate, a program aimed at mitigating the expenses associated with carbon pricing. Despite the cancellation of the rebate initiative last year, government-issued cheques do not have an expiration date. Moreover, families left unclaimed approximately $42.8 million in cheques intended for the Canada Child Benefit, a tax-free monthly subsidy designed to assist with the costs of child rearing. Although the preference of the federal government is to make payments to Canadians via direct deposit, certain benefits are still distributed through traditional mail channels.
