A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck beneath the ocean off the coast of Vancouver Island. The seismic event occurred at 11:41 p.m. PT on Sunday, approximately 219 kilometers southwest of Port Hardy at the northern tip of the island, with its epicenter situated about 10 kilometers below the ocean floor. Authorities from Earthquakes Canada confirmed that there was no threat of a tsunami resulting from the earthquake.
The quake’s epicenter is in close proximity to various significant communities on Vancouver Island, such as Campbell River, located approximately 300 kilometers away, and Port Alberni, about 330 kilometers from the epicenter. Reports indicate that the tremor was felt as far as Metro Vancouver, over 450 kilometers to the southeast, with reports of shaking also coming in from northern Vancouver Island.
