An Air India pilot was apprehended at Vancouver International Airport last week while preparing for a flight, prompting Transport Canada to caution the airline about potential flight authorization revocation for non-compliance with alcohol consumption regulations. The incident occurred on Dec. 23, according to Transport Canada, which will collaborate with Air India and Indian aviation authorities to ensure appropriate follow-up measures.
Richmond RCMP disclosed that the pilot’s arrest followed a reported concern involving a member of the airline crew. An airport spokesperson mentioned that the pilot was readying for Air India’s daily flight from Vancouver to Delhi, resulting in a delay of several hours before the flight eventually took off without incident.
Authorities confirmed that an ongoing investigation is in progress, with no additional details released at this time. Air India has not yet responded to inquiries for comments. Transport Canada emphasized that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of India holds primary responsibility for overseeing Air India’s regulatory compliance.
Transport Canada reiterated that Canadian aviation rules prohibit pilots and crew from performing duties within 12 hours of consuming alcohol or while under its influence. The regulations mandate that airlines cannot assign unfit crew members for duty, and non-compliance may lead to the suspension or cancellation of flight authorizations, along with potential legal consequences.
