The Quebec Liberal Party will officially begin the leadership race on January 12, 2026, succeeding Pablo Rodriguez’s six-month term. The new leader will be selected on March 14, 2026. Marc Tanguay, representing LaFontaine in the National Assembly, is currently acting as the interim leader of the Official Opposition. He took over the position after Rodriguez resigned last week during the party’s internal turmoil.
Accusations emerged regarding illegal campaign contributions made to secure Rodriguez’s victory in the leadership election. Quebec’s anti-corruption police, UPAC, initiated an investigation into the alleged vote-buying scheme. Rodriguez has denied any knowledge of the situation.
Prospective candidates aiming to join the leadership contest must apply by February 13 and gather 750 signatures from eligible party members. Additionally, a $30,000 deposit is required to enter the race. Candidates are bound by an election spending cap of $120,000, excluding the initial deposit.
