The launch of the new recycling system in Ottawa has faced challenges, according to some residents and city officials. Issues such as conflicting pickup information, uncollected bins, and overwhelmed customer service lines have been reported since Miller Waste Systems assumed responsibility for recycling collection at all single-family homes on January 1.
Miller Waste is contracted with Circular Materials, the organization selected by the Ontario government to oversee the province’s recycling program. This initiative, funded by leading food, beverage, and consumer products companies, aims to reduce the financial burden on Ottawa residents for recycling services. Consequently, the city now only covers the costs of garbage and organic waste collection.
While there have been positive reports from residents regarding the expanded recycling options, some initial confusion arose due to discrepancies between pickup dates provided by Circular Materials and the City of Ottawa’s schedule. Technical issues with Circular Materials’ app compounded the situation, leading to missed pickups and communication challenges.
One resident, Gary Rusyn from Kanata, experienced a delay in his recyclables being collected, prompting frustration over the lack of communication and responsiveness from Miller Waste. Despite encountering difficulties, the company assured that efforts were being made to address the app issues and improve service efficiency.
Circular Materials clarified that replacement bins would be provided at no cost to residents, contrary to initial confusion regarding charges for new bins. Efforts are underway to align pickup schedules with residents’ expectations, emphasizing the commitment to smooth transitions and continued waste management operations at existing facilities.
City officials, including Councillor Matt Luloff, acknowledged the adjustment period with the new recycling system and highlighted the importance of effective communication and problem resolution. As the transition progresses, ongoing collaboration between stakeholders is crucial to ensuring a successful and sustainable recycling program in Ottawa.
