Indigenous Journalism Trailblazer Dan David Dies at 73

Thaioronióhte Dan David, a respected Kanien’kehá:ka journalist known for his role in founding the news department of the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN), has passed away at the age of 73. His sister, Marie David, confirmed that he succumbed to cancer on January 12 after a prolonged battle with the illness.

Karyn Pugliese, a colleague and friend of David at APTN, expressed deep sorrow at his loss, highlighting his significant impact on the Indigenous journalism community. Pugliese credited David as the driving force behind APTN News, describing him as an iconic figure whose influence reshaped the narrative of Indigenous stories in Canada.

David’s involvement in establishing APTN News in 2000, originally named InVision News, was motivated by his firsthand experience of mainstream media misrepresenting his community of Kanehsatà:ke during the Oka Crisis in 1990. The 78-day standoff between Kanien’kehá:ka protesters and authorities over disputed lands in Kanehsatà:ke deeply affected David and inspired his mission to revolutionize Indigenous storytelling.

Despite facing challenges in his reporting during the Oka Crisis, where his perceived bias hindered his coverage, David’s commitment to accurate and inclusive journalism never wavered. His subsequent work in South Africa post-apartheid equipped him with invaluable insights that paved the way for APTN’s news division.

Pugliese fondly recalled David’s mentoring style, which blended expertise with humor, creating a nurturing environment for aspiring journalists. His legacy, she noted, lies in his dedication to empowering reporters and reshaping mainstream media’s approach to Indigenous narratives.

David’s humility, humor, and inclusive leadership style endeared him to his colleagues and proteges, fostering a sense of community and respect within the newsroom. His contributions extended beyond APTN, as he held positions at academic institutions and actively participated in charitable endeavors like cycling for cancer research.

Marie David shared that her brother’s impact reverberates through the many lives he touched, with an outpouring of tributes underscoring his profound influence and legacy in the field of journalism.
