“Darlington Nuclear Plant Completes Refurbishment Ahead of Schedule”

A significant milestone has been reached at the Darlington power plant with the completion of a nuclear refurbishment project, paving the way for the unit’s imminent return to operation. Energy Minister Stephen Lecce has announced the successful completion of the refurbishment, which was finished four months ahead of schedule and $150 million under budget. The total cost of the refurbishment project amounted to $12.8 billion.

The comprehensive refurbishment of the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station encompassed all four nuclear reactor units, ensuring the station’s operational lifespan extends at least until 2055. The government under Premier Doug Ford has emphasized the importance of nuclear power in addressing the province’s growing electricity demands. Plans include the installation of four small modular reactors at the Darlington site, alongside considerations for a new large-scale plant at Bruce Power in Tiverton, Ontario. Additionally, there is a proposal for a new nuclear facility near Port Hope, Ontario, and ongoing refurbishment efforts at the Pickering nuclear plant to prolong its operational life.
