Holocaust education advocate Eva Schloss dies at 96

Auschwitz survivor Eva Schloss, known for her advocacy and education on the Holocaust and as the stepsister of Anne Frank, has passed away at the age of 96 in London, where she resided. The Anne Frank Trust UK, for which Schloss served as honorary president, confirmed her death on Saturday.

King Charles expressed his deep respect for Schloss, acknowledging her remarkable contributions to combat prejudice and promote kindness and understanding. He commended her dedication to Holocaust education worldwide through her involvement with the Anne Frank Trust UK.

Eva Geiringer, born in Vienna in 1929, fled to Amsterdam with her family following the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany. There, she befriended Anne Frank, whose diary later became a symbol of the Holocaust. Like the Franks, Schloss and her family went into hiding in the Netherlands but were eventually captured and sent to Auschwitz.

Despite the hardships endured at the camp, Schloss and her mother survived until the liberation in 1945. Tragically, her father and brother perished in Auschwitz. Post-war, she relocated to London, married Zvi Schloss, a German Jewish refugee, and became part of Anne Frank’s family when her mother married Otto Frank.

For many years, Schloss remained silent about her wartime ordeals, struggling with trauma and anger towards the world. However, after participating in an Anne Frank exhibition in 1986, she dedicated herself to Holocaust education, sharing her story in schools, prisons, and various platforms.

Even in her later years, Schloss continued her advocacy work, engaging with young people on issues of tolerance and respect. She emphasized the importance of education in fostering understanding and unity among diverse communities. Her family praised her as a remarkable woman and expressed hope that her legacy would inspire future generations.

Eva Schloss is survived by her three daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, following the passing of her husband Zvi in 2016.
