Inuvik, N.W.T., residents are urged to lower their home heating and decrease energy consumption due to a shortage of propane supply in the area. Inuvik Gas Ltd. issued a notice mentioning an unexpected reduction in fuel supply and challenging weather conditions affecting road access. Details on the local supply situation were not disclosed, but the community is advised to lessen reliance on propane in the upcoming days.
With temperatures dropping to -44 C in Inuvik on Tuesday evening, efforts are underway to address the propane supply issue. Inuvik Gas is collaborating with local authorities and the Yukon and N.W.T. governments to facilitate safe access for propane delivery trucks to enhance the supply. Inuvik Mayor Peter Clarkson confirmed the arrival of two propane resupply trucks in the community after being escorted through the Dempster Highway by Yukon highway officials.
The transportation of fuel to Inuvik is mainly done through the Yukon via the Dempster Highway, which had been temporarily closed until Tuesday afternoon. However, the N.W.T. Department of Infrastructure announced the closure of the highway from Eagle Plains to Fort McPherson due to blizzard conditions.
Upon the arrival of propane in Inuvik, it is converted into natural gas for heating and cooking purposes. Inuvik Gas is yet to confirm the arrival of resupply trucks but assured the preparation of a detailed statement. Clarkson emphasized the collective efforts of all levels of government in the Yukon and N.W.T. to ensure propane delivery to Inuvik amid the severe weather conditions.
Residents are advised to maintain a manageable temperature in their homes by using alternative heating sources like diesel, wood, or electric heaters instead of propane. Additionally, they are encouraged to adopt energy-saving practices such as minimizing oven usage, taking shorter showers, sealing blinds or drapes to conserve heat, and working from home to reduce energy consumption in office buildings.
