Toy-maker Pop Mart and Sony Pictures Entertainment have revealed plans to bring Labubu, the popular monster character, to the big screen in an upcoming feature film. This collaboration signifies Pop Mart’s strategic move to transform its successful toy line into a globally appealing entertainment franchise, as highlighted by the establishment of its European headquarters in London earlier this year.
Renowned filmmaker Paul King, known for his work on “Paddington” and “Wonka,” is set to produce and direct the film, alongside screenwriter Steven Levenson. The movie, which will be a live-action and CGI blend, is still in its early stages of development.
Labubu’s immense popularity has significantly boosted Pop Mart’s market value, surpassing industry giants like Hasbro, Mattel, and Sanrio. Drawing inspiration from Disney’s model, Pop Mart aims to leverage Labubu’s success across various platforms, including movies, theme parks, and merchandise, mirroring Disney’s approach with its intellectual properties.
Industry analysts, such as Jeff Zhang from Morningstar, view the partnership with Sony Pictures as a pivotal move for Pop Mart’s revenue diversification strategy. While the film is expected to enhance the company’s licensing income, experts do not foresee a substantial impact on Pop Mart’s stock valuation.
Labubu, created by artist Kasing Lung as part of “The Monsters Trilogy” in 2015, continues to captivate audiences worldwide. Lung, who will serve as an executive producer on the film, introduced Labubu and The Monsters through a series of picture books. Currently, Pop Mart is celebrating The Monsters’ 10th anniversary with a global tour, with the latest exhibition in Paris.
