Actor Nicholas Brendon, known for his role as Xander Harris on the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has passed away at the age of 54. His official Instagram page confirmed his death on Friday, stating that he died peacefully in his sleep from natural causes.
The statement highlighted Brendon’s transition from acting to painting and art in recent years, emphasizing his passion, sensitivity, and dedication to creating art that reflected his true self. Brendon’s iconic portrayal of Xander Harris, the nerdy and sarcastic friend of the slayer in “Buffy,” endeared him to fans during the show’s run from 1997 to 2003.
Following Brendon’s passing, co-stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, Emma Caulfield, David Boreanaz, and Charisma Carpenter paid tribute to him on social media. Gellar shared a poignant quote from a scene between Brendon’s character and Dawn, played by the late Michelle Trachtenberg, expressing her heartfelt farewell to her colleague.
Aside from “Buffy,” Brendon also appeared as Kevin Lynch on “Criminal Minds” and had roles in “Private Practice” and “Kitchen Confidential.” The actor had been open about his battles with addiction and mental health issues, facing legal troubles over the years. Despite health challenges, Brendon remained optimistic about the future and was actively managing his conditions with medication and treatment.
Plans for a “Buffy” reboot with Chloe Zhao directing were in progress, but Gellar recently announced that the project had been canceled, marking an end to the series’ revival.
