Hockey Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee are set to announce the Olympic women’s hockey team on Friday afternoon, just before the tournament kicks off against Finland on February 5. The Canadian team, which clinched gold in Beijing in 2022, is now facing a tough challenge as they are considered the underdogs against a talented American team.
In the recent four-game Rivalry Series, the American squad dominated, outscoring Canada 24-7. The U.S. team, announced on New Year’s Eve, boasts a lineup filled with top talent, including captain Hilary Knight and leading scorer Kendall Coyne Schofield. The Canadian team, led by assistant captain Blayre Turnbull, acknowledged their shortcomings in the Rivalry Series but remains optimistic about their chances at the upcoming Winter Games.
The Canadian women’s hockey team, under the guidance of head coach Troy Ryan, will be revealed on Friday in Toronto. With only 23 spots available on the roster, some tough decisions will need to be made as the team faces strong competition in Group A, which includes the United States, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Finland.
Unlike past years of centralization, this year’s team was assembled through various training camps and games, including the Rivalry Series. The PWHL has provided a platform for players to showcase their skills and earn a spot on the national team. The forward lineup is expected to feature familiar names like Marie-Philip Poulin and Sarah Fillier, along with emerging talents like Emma Maltais and Daryl Watts.
On defense, returning players like Renata Fast and Erin Ambrose are likely to secure their spots, while newcomers will have to compete for the remaining positions. The battle for the third goaltender spot is between Ève Gascon and Kayle Osborne, with Osborne having a slight edge based on her performance in the PWHL.
As the anticipation builds towards the team announcement, fans and players alike are eager to see who will represent Canada at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Italy.
