Manitoba NDP Member of Parliament Leah Gazan has officially thrown her support behind documentary filmmaker Avi Lewis for the leadership of the party, becoming the first current MP to endorse a candidate. Gazan believes that Lewis is the right choice to revitalize the party and address issues such as the high cost of living and the climate crisis.
Renowned environmentalist David Suzuki also endorsed Lewis earlier this week. Various other candidates in the NDP leadership race have garnered significant endorsements as the January 28 membership deadline approaches.
Former Ontario MP Charlie Angus has backed Alberta MP Heather McPherson, emphasizing the need for experienced leadership to rebuild the party effectively. Union leader Rob Ashton has received the endorsement of the United Steelworkers union, a key ally of the NDP with a strong political organizing arm.
