“Poaching Probe at Point Pelee National Park”

Parks Canada is currently conducting an investigation into a suspected poaching incident involving waterfowl at Point Pelee National Park. The incident is believed to have occurred between 8 p.m. on April 23 and 8 a.m. on April 24 in the park’s marsh area. Authorities are seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the illegal discharge of a firearm or noticed any suspicious individuals or vehicles during that timeframe.

According to a statement issued by the government agency, poaching is a serious violation under the Canada National Parks Act. Officials are particularly interested in obtaining dashcam footage from various locations within the park, including the park entrance, marsh boardwalk, or Blue Heron day use areas, to aid in their investigation.

Debra Parker, a regular visitor to Point Pelee, expressed her distress over the incident, noting that a nesting female swan was likely the target based on photographs taken by a friend who reported the discovery to park authorities. Melissa Hargreaves, another frequent visitor to the park, recalled observing the peaceful behavior of the swan just a day before the incident, emphasizing the heartbreaking nature of the poaching act.

Photography enthusiast Larry Strung, who captured images of the swans during his visit to the park, expressed surprise and sorrow over the harm inflicted on the nesting birds. The community at large has been deeply affected by the incident, with many hoping for the swift identification and prosecution of those responsible for the poaching.

The type of bird poached has not been disclosed by Parks Canada in response to inquiries. As the investigation continues, individuals are urged to come forward with any relevant information that may aid in identifying the perpetrators of this illegal act.
