Phil Collins, Iron Maiden, Billy Idol, Queen Latifah, Oasis, Sade, and Joy Division/New Order are set to be honored with inductions into the prestigious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, along with Wu-Tang Clan and the late Luther Vandross, who are first-time nominees.
The announcement was made during the recent broadcast of American Idol. To qualify for induction, artists must have released their debut commercial recording at least 25 years prior. The inductees were chosen through a voting process involving over 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry experts.
Renowned artist Phil Collins, already a Hall of Fame member as part of Genesis, secured his spot with iconic solo hits like “In the Air Tonight” and “One More Night,” and has clinched eight Grammy awards, including the 1985 Album of the Year for “No Jacket Required.” This marked Collins’ first appearance on the ballot.
Sade, the soul-jazz vocalist, known for hits such as “Smooth Operator” and “The Sweetest Taboo,” was also nominated in 2024. Wu-Tang Clan, the rap trailblazers, gained recognition with their groundbreaking 1993 debut album “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).”
Iron Maiden, a two-time nominee, played a pivotal role in the rise of British heavy metal with seminal albums like “The Number of the Beast.” Luther Vandross, who sold over 25 million albums and produced hits like “Here and Now” and “Any Love,” passed away in 2005, influencing artists like Kendrick Lamar and SZA.
The induction ceremony, scheduled for November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, will feature Manchester’s post-punk pioneers Joy Division and New Order, along with the Britpop legends Oasis led by Noel and Liam Gallagher. Billy Idol, the English artist known for songs like “White Wedding” and “Rebel Yell,” will also be honored.
The event will be televised in December on ABC and Disney+, with next year’s ceremony returning to Cleveland, the Hall of Fame’s home. Apart from the performer category, inductees can enter under special committee categories like early influence, musical excellence, and the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award.
This year’s early influence award recognizes Queen Latifah, Celia Cruz, Fela Kuti, MC Lyte, and Gram Parsons. The musical excellence category pays tribute to songwriter Linda Creed and producers Arif Mardin, Jimmy Miller, and Rick Rubin. Additionally, the legendary TV host Ed Sullivan will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award for his significant impact on music history through his iconic TV show.
Among those who were nominated but did not make it this year are Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, INXS, Melissa Etheridge, Jeff Buckley, Pink, New Edition, and Shakira. Last year’s inductees included Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, Soundgarden, Salt-N-Pepa, The White Stripes, and others.
