On a recent weekend, Erin’s Pub in St. John’s, N.L. witnessed an unusual event. Business owner Allan Bearns took the stage not for a musical performance but to undertake a unique initiative to support the community. He decided to read J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel, “The Hobbit,” in its entirety to raise funds for The Gathering Place, a local organization aiding the homeless.
In honor of Tolkien’s birthday, Bearns embarked on this marathon reading session, drawing inspiration from the themes of friendship and adventure in the legendary author’s work. The event aimed to bring attention to the plight of the homeless in the city, with Bearns emphasizing the importance of compassion and solidarity in his choice of literary tribute.
Reflecting on his own experiences of homelessness in the past, Bearns highlighted the personal significance of the cause. He shared how he had faced periods of homelessness, recalling instances of sleeping on friends’ couches and in unconventional settings. Despite the lighthearted nature of the fundraiser, Bearns stressed the seriousness of the issue and praised The Gathering Place for its dedicated efforts in helping those in need.
The reading of “The Hobbit” lasted nearly 11 hours, concluding close to midnight, and raised $1,292 for The Gathering Place. Bearns’ commitment to this charitable endeavor showcased his deep-rooted commitment to supporting the community and advocating for meaningful solutions to homelessness.
