Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada expressed his concerns regarding the escalating situation caused by U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on European countries until they agree to his demand to acquire Greenland. Carney emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations, stating that decisions regarding Greenland’s future should be left to Greenland and Denmark.
Trump announced on social media that several European countries, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, could face tariffs if a deal is not reached to purchase Greenland. The mentioned countries supported Denmark in this matter, cautioning that U.S. military action in a NATO territory could jeopardize the alliance.
In response, eight European countries released a statement reaffirming their solidarity with Greenland and emphasizing the need for dialogue based on principles of sovereignty. They criticized tariff threats for undermining transatlantic relations and potentially leading to further conflict.
General Jennie Carignan, the chief of the Canadian defense staff, acknowledged the discussions within NATO triggered by Trump’s interest in Greenland. Despite challenges, Carignan remained optimistic about NATO’s resilience and stressed the importance of maintaining communication and collaboration among allies.
Denmark recently announced plans to strengthen its military presence in Greenland alongside NATO allies. When asked about potential Canadian involvement, Carignan highlighted ongoing cooperation with Denmark on Arctic security within the NATO framework.
Regarding Trump’s invitation for Carney to join the “Board of Peace” overseeing Gaza governance, reports indicated a broader scope than initially anticipated, including a requirement for member contributions. While Canada affirmed Carney’s acceptance of the invitation, details on financial commitments remained unresolved.
During a press conference in Qatar, Carney shared that Qatar had committed to significant investments in Canadian infrastructure projects, aiming to expedite construction, boost energy sectors, and create job opportunities. He highlighted the importance of enhancing cultural ties between Canada and Qatar to promote mutual understanding and collaboration.
Carney emphasized the benefits of cultural exchange in strengthening relationships between nations and announced plans to finalize agreements with Qatar on investment promotion and protection. Additionally, Canada intends to enhance defense partnerships with Qatar by appointing a defense attaché in Doha.
Carney is set to conclude his international trip by attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, after fostering key partnerships and agreements during his visit to Qatar.
