“Community Triumph: Ancient ‘Bellwood Boulder’ Sign Unveiled”

Residents of Old Ottawa South are rejoicing over the installation of new signage that recounts the discovery of an ancient boulder in their neighborhood during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gauri Sreenivasan, a resident of Bellwood Avenue, expressed the significance of the sign at a recent unveiling event in Windsor Park, emphasizing its role in public education and engagement.

The signage details the history of the colossal erratic, now affectionately dubbed the “Bellwood Boulder,” which was deposited in the area by glacial movement around 10,000 years ago. The boulder remained hidden beneath Bellwood Avenue until April 2021 when it was unearthed during water pipe replacement work.

During the pandemic lockdown, Sreenivasan and other residents of Bellwood Avenue found solace in the presence of the massive rock, which became a gathering spot for the community. The boulder served as a meeting point for conversations and interactions, fostering a sense of togetherness during challenging times.

When there was a proposal to crush the boulder for removal, residents, led by Sreenivasan, advocated for its preservation not only as a natural relic but also as a symbol of unity within the neighborhood. The successful relocation of the boulder to Windsor Park was a result of community efforts and demonstrated the collective power of individuals coming together for a common cause.

Sreenivasan hopes that those who read the sign will recognize the impact of community solidarity and the ability to effect positive change when united. The story of the “Bellwood Boulder” stands as a testament to the strength of community bonds and the lasting impact of grassroots activism.
