“Rothesay Residents Divided Over Ice Fishing Shack Ban”

Mike Donovan has a unique approach to ice fishing on the Kennebasis River in Rothesay. Unlike many who use traditional shacks, Donovan opts for a more social experience by fishing from his lawn chair or a small pop-up tent when it’s windy. Having been a part of this fishing community for over 40 years, Donovan enjoys the interactions with fellow anglers that come with his open setup.

However, Donovan, like many others, is disappointed by the recent installation of a gate by the Town of Rothesay. This gate aims to prevent vehicles from driving onto the river and setting up ice fishing shacks, which have been a long-standing feature in the Renforth Wharf area. The town’s decision comes after years of dealing with abandoned shacks and garbage left behind by anglers at the end of the ice fishing season.

Deputy Mayor Matt Alexander expressed the town’s efforts to work with the fishing community to maintain cleanliness and safety on the ice. Despite these efforts, the town has faced challenges with some individuals abandoning their shacks and leaving behind significant amounts of garbage, requiring community cleanup efforts.

While Donovan acknowledges the growing problem of abandoned shacks and debris, he believes that collaboration between the town, fishing community, and relevant authorities is key to addressing these issues effectively. He suggests holding violators accountable instead of penalizing the entire fishing community.

Alexander remains open to the possibility of allowing shacks back on the ice if a responsible fishing association is formed to ensure proper maintenance and cleanup efforts. Meanwhile, local businesses have seen an increase in demand for pop-up tents and manufactured shacks since the gate’s installation.

Jack Ross, the owner of Kennebecasis Ice Adventures, hopes for a resolution that allows for the return of hard shacks while maintaining cleanliness and safety standards on the ice. Donovan, on the other hand, expresses concerns that the absence of shacks may lead to a decline in the vibrant winter village atmosphere that has attracted both locals and tourists to the area.

The colorful and unique ice fishing shacks have become a cultural symbol of Renforth’s fishing village, drawing admiration from visitors around the world. Donovan reminisces about the joy of sharing his fishing experiences with tourists and witnessing the appreciation for the vibrant shacks that have made the ice fishing village a cherished destination.
