A 36-year-old man from northern Quebec made a court appearance on Tuesday following a gunfire incident with officers from the Nunavik Police Service on December 20. Tragically, a six-year-old girl, as identified by local authorities, passed away ten days after sustaining injuries in a residence in Inukjuak, Que., during the shooting incident.
Andrew Naluktuk is charged with discharging a firearm at two peace officers, assaulting the officers with a weapon, assaulting another individual, and causing bodily harm to a child unlawfully.
Naluktuk appeared in court via video conference for a brief session on Tuesday, and his case was adjourned until January 23. According to Quebec’s police watchdog, the officers in Nunavik engaged in a gunfire exchange with an individual outside a home in the community around 3:30 a.m. in response to a reported threat to other occupants.
The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes reported that the individual was injured and arrested during the police intervention. Another person inside the residence was seriously injured and later died, with the cause of death not disclosed by officials.
