A multi-vehicle collision on Route 335 in Laval, Quebec, has left a five-month-old infant in critical condition. Tragically, a six-year-old girl lost her life, and several others sustained injuries in the incident. The crash occurred between Dagenais Boulevard and Saint-Saëns Street on Monday evening.
Initially, Urgences-santé reported nine injuries, including three adults, the five-month-old baby, and the young girl who later passed away. Four additional individuals were also injured but were not in life-threatening condition, according to the paramedic service.
Following the collision, a 40-year-old man was briefly detained by Laval police on Tuesday before being released. Subsequently, the case was transferred to Quebec’s Crown prosecutor’s office for further review. The prosecutor’s office requested additional information, leading to the man’s release with the possibility of future charges.
Laval city councillor David De Cotis expressed condolences and raised concerns about the safety of Route 335 in a social media post. He advocated for immediate safety measures such as concrete barriers, temporary traffic-control devices, and on-site assessments by transportation authorities to prevent future accidents.
In response, Quebec’s Transport Ministry stated that a comprehensive analysis will be conducted within two months to address safety concerns on the road. The ministry indicated a commitment to taking necessary actions for road safety based on the findings. It was noted that no prior safety requests had been made by the City of Laval regarding the road section in question, which is currently undergoing temporary lane configurations as part of a construction project.
The Transport Ministry emphasized its dedication to road safety and assured that appropriate measures will be implemented as needed. The details of the analysis will not be disclosed to respect ongoing investigations by law enforcement and the coroner’s office.
