An evacuation order in downtown Sydney, N.S., was lifted on Wednesday evening following the discovery of a live explosive device earlier in the day. Cape Breton Regional Police confirmed that the explosive device was safely disposed of by the military’s explosive disposal unit, allowing for the area to be reopened to the public.
The incident unfolded when police responded to a report at 153 Pitt St. around 7:30 a.m. after a live grenade was found inside a business, seemingly thrown through a window. Staff Sgt. Darren Barrington explained that upon entering the building, authorities discovered what appeared to be an explosive device on the floor. Subsequently, they retreated and called in the military’s explosive detonation unit for assistance.
