A man from Chetwynd made an appearance in court last Thursday regarding a homicide that occurred in the same community in northeast B.C. last year. Kenneth Albert Wood is facing charges of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Carlene Engellend in Chetwynd in March of last year. Wood appeared via video from the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre, where he is currently being held. He was scheduled to decide whether he prefers a trial by jury or judge alone, but the proceedings were postponed to January 20 to allow the Crown to provide additional evidence for the defense to review. Prosecutors informed the court that they are considering more serious charges, with a decision expected at Wood’s next court appearance. Engellend was discovered deceased on March 9 following a medical distress call that prompted emergency services to respond. The RCMP had initially labeled the death as suspicious and had the major crimes unit investigate. Court documents reveal that Wood was officially charged with second-degree murder in July of the same year. Despite the charges, law enforcement did not release any information publicly about the case. Chetwynd is situated in the Eastern Foothills of the Rocky Mountains, around 240 kilometers north of Prince George, B.C. as the crow flies.
