Toronto is eagerly awaiting confirmation of $97 million in funding for the upcoming FIFA World Cup matches this summer. The city’s FIFA secretariat provided an update to the World Cup subcommittee, stating that negotiations are still ongoing with the Ontario government regarding the funding agreement.
The total budget for the six matches is $380 million, with the city contributing nearly $180 million and the federal government pledging about $104 million. The remaining amount is expected to come from the province. Coun. Paul Ainslie urged the Ontario government to fulfill its commitment, emphasizing the economic benefits that the tournament will bring.
FIFA estimates that Toronto could see a positive economic impact of $1.3 billion from hosting the matches. Coun. Amber Morley expressed confidence that the Ontario government will meet its obligations and highlighted the potential tax revenue generated from visitor spending.
While the city anticipated cash contributions from the province, part of the funding will be provided in the form of services such as policing, transportation, and healthcare. Discussions between the city and province are ongoing regarding the valuation of these services.
Premier Doug Ford’s office confirmed that the $97 million commitment will include provincial services. If the cash component falls short, the city will consider alternative funding sources or cost-cutting measures. Mayor Olivia Chow has emphasized the city’s financial limitations and ongoing discussions with the province to address funding concerns.
