Firefighter Jonathan Maggio encountered a swan stuck on the frozen Connecticut river, initially thinking it was too late to save it. Despite appearing lifeless, Maggio and a team were determined to attempt a rescue. The swan surprised them by lifting its head as they approached, sparking hope and applause from onlookers.
The call for help came after concerned citizens reported the swan’s plight, prompting a rescue operation involving 23 individuals from the fire department and a wildlife rescue group. It took about 30 minutes to free the swan, who seemed nervous but quickly understood the rescuers’ intentions. The team carefully removed the ice surrounding the swan and transported it to a veterinary facility for treatment, where it was named Clancey.
Clancey, found cold-stunned and dehydrated, received immediate care that led to a visible improvement in his condition. He is now recovering at the Norwalk Veterinary Hospital and is expected to fully recuperate. Maggio, reflecting on his three decades of rescue work, expressed immense pride in the successful operation, noting that this particular rescue will always hold a special place in his career.
