In a statement provided to CBC News by her legal team, Tenisha Warner expressed her efforts to handle her late husband’s complex estate privately while honoring his wishes for their daughter, MacKenzie. She emphasized Malcolm’s intention to provide for their daughter and herself, highlighting her struggles as a single mother and sole caregiver for MacKenzie. Tenisha Warner stated that legal action was necessary to protect their rights before any potential legal deadlines expired.
The legal dispute revolves around a trust established in 1996, before Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s relationship with Tenisha and the birth of their daughter. The trust currently designates all its assets to other family members, primarily Pamela Warner, along with his father and half-sister. Allegations in the court documents suggest that funds from life insurance and retirement accounts have already been distributed to these beneficiaries, totaling more than $1.25 million.
Tenisha Warner’s petition outlines several financial obligations that were allegedly unmet by Malcolm-Jamal Warner before his passing, including a term life insurance policy naming Tenisha as the sole beneficiary, an anniversary gift provision, Roth IRA funding, and salary obligations. She is seeking over $1.2 million in total, along with requests to be recognized as an omitted heir, to freeze trust distributions, and to receive a detailed financial report.
