U.S. skeleton athlete Katie Uhlaender has formally requested a wildcard entry to participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics following the withdrawal of four Canadian skeleton athletes from a recent competition in Lake Placid, U.S. This withdrawal by the Canadian team impacted the available ranking points, ultimately dashing Uhlaender’s hopes of qualifying for the upcoming Milano-Cortina Olympics.
Uhlaender, a two-time world champion with a previous best Olympic finish of fourth place in 2014, has raised concerns about the conduct of Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton (BCS), alleging that they influenced the competition in a way that affected the qualification points for athletes from multiple countries. She emphasized that her request for a wildcard is aimed at maintaining the integrity and values of Olympic sports.
In response to these allegations, BCS has been absolved of any wrongdoing by the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation after an investigation. BCS clarified that the decision to withdraw the athletes was based on safety considerations, albeit acknowledging the unintended consequences on the competition field size.
Uhlaender intends to escalate the matter by seeking intervention from the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
