Decades of reliance on propane tanks for heating and fuel in Nordegg, a mountain hamlet 170 kilometers west of Red Deer, Alberta, are set to shift as a new natural gas pipeline nears completion. The pipeline, connecting Nordegg to the Tidewater Stolberg Gas Plant 11 kilometers away, is a significant upgrade for the former coal-mining town, once home to nearly 3,000 residents but now a smaller community known for its scenic mountain views.
The $8-million pipeline project, spearheaded by Rocky Gas Co-op, received financial support from the province, the cooperative itself, and Clearwater County.
