The Port City Power basketball team has returned to Saint John, but its longevity remains uncertain this time around. The team, previously defunct before the 2025 season, has been resurrected in a new form.
David Magley, the president of The Basketball League (TBL), mentioned in an interview with Information Morning Saint John that the previous version of the team failed due to financial sustainability challenges related to facilities and the business model. With TBL currently comprising 40 teams entering its eighth season, Port City Power is scheduled to commence games next month.
Highlighting Saint John as a promising market with a history of basketball teams, Magley emphasized the need for a revised strategy. Drawing parallels to the successful model in Moncton, where the team plays at a smaller venue before potentially moving to a larger arena, Saint John Power will also play at the UNB Saint John campus instead of TD Station.
Magley explained the financial burden of converting ice arenas for basketball games and stressed the importance of smaller venues for profitability. By aiming for 400 to 500 fans per game, the team anticipates a sustainable business model. Despite the decision to retain the Saint John Power name for continuity, Magley underscored the league’s temporary ownership of the team to facilitate its establishment before transitioning to private ownership.
Dustin Caissie, the team market owner for Tri-City Tide, expressed optimism about the addition of another team in the region, citing benefits for local basketball development. Caissie emphasized the league’s ownership as a key factor for the team’s progress, ensuring a focus on growth, fan engagement, and community sponsorships.
TBL’s emphasis on local player recruitment to foster fan support and team loyalty was highlighted by Caissie, emphasizing a gradual team-building approach. The league’s commitment to supporting the team’s success, combined with local involvement and intentions, is seen as pivotal in making the venture successful.
