In 2016, a woman from Prince George expressed her belief that she could be the inspiration behind Dolly Parton’s iconic song “Jolene.” Juline Whelan had the opportunity to meet the renowned singer in 1972, fitting the description of the young girl whom Parton had encountered and named the song after.
During an interview with a Norwegian TV show called Lydverket in 2008, Dolly Parton revealed that she derived the name “Jolene” from a red-haired, green-eyed girl who approached her for an autograph in her early career.
Although Juline Whelan does not recall the exact conversation, she vividly remembers meeting Dolly Parton in 1972, a year before the release of “Jolene.” At the age of 10, Whelan attended a country music concert featuring Parton at Disneyland, where she approached the singer for an autograph, particularly drawn to Parton’s song “Coat of Many Colors.”
Years later, after watching a TV movie about Dolly Parton’s life in 2015, Whelan began to connect the dots. Upon researching the origins of the name “Jolene,” she stumbled upon Parton’s interview describing a girl resembling herself.
The resemblance was striking to Whelan, with her red hair, green eyes, and fair complexion aligning with the young girl described by Parton. The frequent mix-up of her name as “Jolene” further reinforced Whelan’s belief that she might be the inspiration behind the song.
While the song “Jolene” was inspired by a child, its lyrics convey a mature theme of pleading with another woman not to interfere in a relationship. Parton disclosed that part of the song’s narrative was influenced by a flirtatious bank teller who showed interest in her husband.
Despite facing teasing from peers and colleagues who associated her with the song, Whelan has come to appreciate the significance of sharing a name with the famous tune. She now admires the song and anticipates the opportunity to meet Dolly Parton during her performance in Vancouver in September.
Whelan remains hopeful for a chance to have a second encounter with Parton, reflecting that she might be left speechless if the opportunity arises.
