Must read

Many municipal services in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., are closed Friday due to a significant winter storm.

In a news release, the city says it received 50 centimetres of snow overnight and expects another 30 centimetres throughout the day.

The city has cancelled transit services, garbage and recycling pickup for the day, and the landfill is closed.

Community centres are also closed until further notice.

“Motorists should drive according to the road conditions and maintain a safe distance for heavy equipment operators to clear and sand roadways safely and efficiently,” the city said in a news release.

Officials add the public works department continues to deploy all available crews for snow clearing to keep up with the storm.

It says arterial and collector roads are being prioritized, followed by residential streets.

Algoma University has cancelled all classes and campus activities today, and Algoma Public Health is also closed.
