“Actor Timothy Busfield Denied Bond in Child Abuse Case”

Emmy Award-winning actor Timothy Busfield was denied bond during his initial court appearance on Wednesday following his surrender to face accusations of child sexual abuse. The charges relate to claims of inappropriate physical contact with a minor while directing a television show in New Mexico.

Appearing via video link from jail, where he had been detained since Tuesday, Busfield remained silent during the brief hearing and was not required to enter a plea. A detention hearing to determine his custody status will be scheduled within five business days, with a preliminary hearing set for January 29.

The arrest warrant for Busfield, known for roles in “The West Wing,” “Field of Dreams,” and “Thirtysomething,” was issued by Albuquerque police on charges of criminal sexual contact and child abuse, allegedly occurring on the set of the series “The Cleaning Lady.”

In a pre-surrender video, Busfield, married to actor Melissa Gilbert, refuted the allegations as false and vowed to contest the charges. Prosecutors are pushing for his continued detention until trial, citing a historical pattern of sexual misconduct, misuse of authority, and grooming behavior over two decades.

They highlighted concerns of witness intimidation and professional repercussions, emphasizing the potential risks posed by offenders in positions of power. Prosecutors criticized Busfield for releasing a media video, suggesting a preference for controlling the narrative over legal compliance.

According to the criminal complaint, the child victim, along with his twin brother, reported incidents of inappropriate touching by Busfield, with fears of reprisal preventing disclosure. The abuse was reported to have occurred between November 2022 and spring 2024, as per the twins’ mother’s account to Child Protective Services.

Busfield and his attorney have denied the allegations, alleging a motive of revenge due to the twins being replaced on the series. The investigation commenced following a hospital referral in November 2024, with conflicting findings between Warner Bros.’ internal inquiry and prosecutors’ claims of overlooked witnesses.

A judge will decide on the prosecution’s request for continued detention, underscoring the gravity of the allegations against Busfield and the legal complexities surrounding the case.
