Albertans rang in the new year with excitement, but for Stacey Simpson, owner of Lucky 7 Cattle Co., the night took an unexpected turn. Located near Sedgewick, Alta., just southeast of Edmonton, Simpson’s heifer Dukey went into labor shortly after midnight on January 1, 2026.
Dukey’s labor initially seemed typical, but Simpson was taken aback when the symptoms persisted after the birth of two calves. Prompted by her father’s intuition, Simpson rechecked Dukey and was astonished to discover a third calf on the way.
The triplets, named Carla, Darla, and Marla, arrived healthy, defying the odds of survival for triplet calves. This was not the first time Lucky 7 had welcomed triplets; Dukey’s mother gave birth to Hewey, Dewey, and Louie the previous year, who are still thriving in the herd.
Kylie Simpson, Stacey’s sister and fellow farmer at Lucky 7, emphasized the rarity of the event, considering they only manage 35 cows. The decision on the future of the triplets, whether for breeding or sale, is yet to be made.
Meanwhile, the buzz around Lucky 7 and the triplets continues to grow, with a video featuring the trio gaining millions of views and global attention on social media. Stacey Simpson expressed gratitude for the unexpected spotlight and plans to keep followers updated on Marla, Carla, and Darla’s progress throughout the year.
