“Apple Raises iPad and MacBook Prices Amid Memory Chip Shortage”

Apple announced price increases for its iPad and MacBook models due to rising costs of memory and storage chips driven by the AI industry’s data center expansion. The company stated that the consumer electronics sector is experiencing an unprecedented challenge with component prices rapidly escalating.

Apple promptly adjusted prices on its website, with the entry-level MacBook Neo now starting at $949, up $150 from its previous price. Prices for the Education model also rose to $819 from $679. Furthermore, Apple raised prices for its HomePod smart speakers and Apple TV, but the iPhone remains unaffected.

The surge in prices is attributed to AI companies prioritizing orders for critical components like RAM, leaving limited supply for consumer electronics manufacturers. This trend has led to significant price hikes across various consumer products, according to industry experts.

As a result of the ongoing RAM shortage, gaming console manufacturers have also increased prices. Microsoft recently announced a price hike for its Xbox consoles, with prices expected to reach up to $800 in the U.S. Valve’s Steam Machine saw a higher-than-planned price due to component shortages, while Sony and Nintendo have also adjusted prices for their gaming consoles.

The impact of these price increases is being felt by retailers and consumers, with concerns about the sustainability of the current pricing trend. Micron, a major memory manufacturer, anticipates the memory and storage shortage to persist until at least 2027, emphasizing the need for increased production capacity to stabilize prices in the future.
