A Swiss court has ruled that the co-owner of a bar in the luxurious ski destination of Crans-Montana, where a tragic fire claimed 40 lives on New Year’s Day, is to remain in custody. Jacques Moretti will be detained for an initial period of three months, with the possibility of a review pending implementation of measures to mitigate the risk of flight, such as a security deposit.
Following an extensive hearing with Jacques and his wife Jessica, Valais canton prosecutors initially ordered Jacques’ detention last Friday. The couple has expressed deep sorrow over the fire incident and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
In response to the court’s decision, Jessica Moretti’s legal representatives stated that once the specified conditions are met, her husband will be able to regain his freedom. They emphasized the couple’s unwavering commitment to facing the legal proceedings together and abiding by them without evasion.
Last Friday, Swiss authorities declared a national day of mourning, with church bells tolling across the country in remembrance of the victims. Among the casualties, more than half were teenagers, while an additional 116 individuals sustained injuries, with many in critical condition.
