Renowned British actor Anthony Head, recognized for his roles in popular TV series such as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Ted Lasso,” has passed away at the age of 72, as confirmed by his family on Friday. Head’s daughters, Emily and Daisy Head, revealed to the Press Association news agency that the actor had succumbed to complications arising from pneumonia.
In the 1980s, Head gained prominence among British television viewers as one half of a potential romantic duo in a series of advertisements for Nescafé instant coffee. His portrayal of librarian Rupert Giles, the mentor to the main character in the beloved supernatural series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” from 1997 to 2003, further cemented his reputation.
More recently, Head took on the role of Rupert Mannion, the antagonistic ex-husband of Hannah Waddingham’s character in the acclaimed series “Ted Lasso.” His daughters expressed their enduring grief over his passing but emphasized that his legacy would endure through the shows he contributed to and the audiences who cherished them.
Born on February 20, 1954, in London to Seafield Head, a documentary filmmaker, and Helen Shingler, an actress, Anthony Stewart Head hailed from an entertainment-oriented family background. Notable performances in his career included portraying Geoffrey Howe alongside Meryl Streep in the award-winning film “The Iron Lady.”
Additionally, Head showcased his versatility by playing various roles, such as a prime minister in the comedy show “Little Britain” and King Uther Pendragon in the TV series “Merlin.” His diverse career spanned appearances in productions like “Motherland,” “Manchild,” and “Silent Witness,” alongside ventures into music recording as a vocalist.
Tragically, Head was preceded in death by his longtime partner, animal rights advocate Sarah Fisher, in 2025. His contributions to the entertainment industry and his memorable performances will continue to resonate with audiences even in his absence.
