Beluga Whale Cyprus Dies at SeaWorld San Diego

SeaWorld San Diego announced the unfortunate passing of Cyprus, a nine-year-old male beluga whale that was rescued from Marineland in Ontario. The beluga, who arrived at the park in August, stopped eating on Friday, leading to concerns about his intestinal health. Despite initially showing positive progress, the animal’s health deteriorated, highlighting the challenges faced by relocated animals.

Marineland in Niagara Falls faced financial difficulties, prompting the transfer of 30 belugas and four dolphins to other facilities. The relocation aimed to provide a better environment for the captive marine mammals. However, the recent deaths of several belugas and a dolphin have raised questions about the animals’ well-being post-relocation.

SeaWorld San Diego assured that the remaining rescued belugas are under close observation and receiving necessary care. The facility emphasized its commitment to the animals’ welfare and pledged to share the results of Cyprus’s necropsy with relevant authorities. The recent deaths highlight the complexities involved in relocating marine mammals and the importance of thorough monitoring and care post-relocation.
