The Toronto Blue Jays have officially inked a four-year, $60 million deal with Japanese infielder Kazuma Okamoto. Okamoto, a standout in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league with six all-star selections, posted impressive stats last season, hitting .327 with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs in 69 games for the Yomiuri Giants despite missing a significant portion of the season due to an elbow injury.
As part of the agreement between Major League Baseball (MLB) and Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), the Blue Jays are obligated to pay the Giants a posting fee of $10,875,000. Okamoto will receive a $5 million signing bonus, a $7 million salary for this year, and $16 million annually for the next three seasons.
Expected to primarily play at third base alongside five-time All-Star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first, Okamoto’s arrival may shift the Blue Jays’ lineup dynamics. The team recently designated right-handed pitcher Paxton Schultz for assignment to make room for Okamoto.
The Blue Jays, who narrowly missed clinching their first World Series title since 1993, have been active in bolstering their roster. In addition to Okamoto, the team has secured notable signings, including right-handers Dylan Cease on a $210 million, seven-year contract, Cody Ponce on a $30 million, three-year deal, and reliever Tyler Rogers on a $37 million, three-year agreement. Furthermore, right-hander Shane Bieber opted to exercise his $16 million player option for the 2026 season instead of exploring free agency.
