British Columbia Premier David Eby and Jobs Minister Ravi Kahlon will be embarking on a trade mission to India in the coming week. The purpose of the mission is to bolster ties with key government and industry figures in cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Bengaluru. This initiative comes at a crucial juncture as India is poised to become the world’s third-largest economy soon.
Highlighting the significance of the trade mission, Eby emphasized the need to strengthen economic partnerships, especially in light of the challenging global trade environment following the imposition of tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump. The delegation aims to focus on enhancing opportunities in various sectors, with a special emphasis on supporting the forestry industry, which has been adversely impacted by existing tariffs. Additionally, the delegation will advocate for the clean energy, mining, and technology sectors.
Kahlon pointed out that British Columbia boasts a thriving tech sector, with over 12,000 tech companies and a rapidly expanding life sciences industry. The mission seeks to leverage these strengths and explore avenues for collaboration and investment in India.
In a separate context, Premier Eby expressed ongoing concerns regarding the murder of Canadian Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia. He highlighted the importance of the criminal justice process in addressing such incidents and reiterated the need for collaboration between federal and provincial governments on matters of mutual interest.
Regarding recent developments in Venezuela, Eby diverged from the stance of Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, advocating for increased investment in the Trans Mountain pipeline over the construction of a new pipeline. He emphasized the potential benefits of directing public funds towards refinery projects to support domestic oil and gas production.
The upcoming trade mission to India follows successful engagements in other regions, such as Asia, where significant projects like LNG Phase 2 have been pursued, showcasing the province’s commitment to fostering international partnerships and economic growth.
