The Canadian government is allocating $200 million towards a space launch pad owned by a Canadian company for satellite launches. Ottawa’s investment aims to secure a 10-year lease on the East Coast launch pad, a critical component of the new defence industrial strategy.
Currently, Canada lacks its own space launch capabilities, relying on the United States for satellite launches. The anticipated launch pad is set to be operational by 2028, boosting Canada’s sovereignty in space endeavors. Defence Minister David McGuinty unveiled the initiative at a Canadian Space Agency facility in the capital city, highlighting the importance of satellite technology across various sectors of the Canadian economy.
Emphasizing the need for self-reliance in space missions, McGuinty stressed the significance of the project in enhancing Canada’s security and independence. Additionally, Canada is planning to join the NATO Starlift program, enhancing its ability to launch payloads into space swiftly.
The construction of the space launch pad in Nova Scotia by Maritime Launch Services, a Halifax-based company, is a pivotal step towards establishing a sovereign launch capability for Canada. Stephen Matier, the CEO of the company, expressed enthusiasm about the federal support, signaling a positive market response and positioning the spaceport as a key player in the industry.
The move to develop a Canadian spaceport comes amid a surge in satellite launches worldwide. With projections indicating a substantial increase in satellites orbiting the earth, the need for efficient launch capabilities is paramount.
