Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed Canada’s support for the Venezuelan people’s right to determine their own fate in a peaceful and democratic society following the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump of the capture of Venezuela’s president early Saturday. Carney stated on social media that Canada does not recognize Nicolás Maduro’s regime as legitimate and welcomes the opportunity for freedom, democracy, peace, and prosperity for Venezuelans.
Carney emphasized Canada’s backing for a peaceful, negotiated transition process led by Venezuelans that upholds democratic principles and urged all parties to abide by international law. Trump announced a successful “large-scale strike” against Venezuela, capturing Maduro, leading to explosions and military activities in Caracas. Global Affairs Canada confirmed no reports of Canadian casualties and advised Canadians in Venezuela to contact the Canadian Embassy in Bogota due to the closure of the embassy in Venezuela.
The U.S. Attorney General announced indictments against Maduro and his wife in New York, where they will face legal consequences. Trump mentioned that the U.S. will oversee Venezuela until a safe and proper transition can occur. This marks a significant U.S. intervention in Latin America since the 1989 Panama invasion. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand echoed Carney’s sentiments, denouncing Maduro’s regime and supporting the Venezuelan people’s pursuit of a peaceful and democratic society.
Opposition parties in Canada expressed conflicting views on the U.S. actions, with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre applauding Maduro’s capture, while NDP Leader Don Davies criticized the U.S. intervention as illegal and a breach of international law. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet raised concerns about the use of military force and the disregard for international law in addressing the Venezuelan crisis. The Green Party condemned the strikes on Venezuela and the detention of Maduro, citing violations of international law and the destabilizing impact on global security.
