A young child sustained severe injuries following a coyote attack at a playground in Whitby, Ont. According to Durham police, the incident occurred at Vanier Park where the two-year-old boy was bitten in the face by the coyote. The child’s guardian and bystanders successfully scared off the coyote, and the boy was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Shortly after the playground incident, another coyote in distress was reported near Harriet and Annes streets. Police located the animal and safely removed it without any reported injuries. Durham police are collaborating with local authorities and health departments to investigate the incidents, monitor coyote activity, and prevent future encounters.
Following recent coyote incidents in Whitby, including a previous child bite, police issued a public advisory urging caution in public spaces. The community has reported 96 coyote sightings in the last month, as per the town’s online dashboard. Similar concerns have been raised in neighboring areas, with York police issuing warnings after recent attacks on children.
To ensure safety from coyotes, police recommend maintaining a safe distance if encountered, supervising children and leashing pets, following posted guidance in coyote-prone areas, and avoiding known coyote habitats. Additionally, residents are advised to eliminate food attractants and report any coyote sightings to animal services promptly.
