“Daily Bread Food Bank Cuts Ties with Feed Scarborough Amid Funding Discrepancies”

Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Bank has decided to sever ties with Feed Scarborough, one of its major member agencies, due to discrepancies found in the invoices provided by Feed Scarborough for grant funding. The charity reported financial management concerns, including discrepancies in invoices and other irregularities, to the police. Daily Bread’s board of directors opted not to renew Feed Scarborough’s membership agreement, effectively cutting off food deliveries and funding after the current membership expires at the end of this month.

Neil Hetherington, CEO of Daily Bread, revealed that the charity had suspended funding to Feed Scarborough during the investigation of financial irregularities but continued to supply food to ensure residents in south Scarborough were not adversely affected. Hetherington emphasized the importance of ensuring that every dollar is allocated towards the intended charitable purposes, emphasizing that any misused funds equate to a missed meal opportunity.

Feed Scarborough, a significant recipient of food donations from Daily Bread, received millions of dollars’ worth of food annually and was granted $620,000 for operational and capacity-building projects from 2021 to 2023. However, an examination of invoices, corporation records, and emails raised concerns about Feed Scarborough’s financial management, including unaccounted invoices, self-approved expense claims, and the use of grant money to purchase food from a company owned by its CEO.

While these allegations have not led to criminal charges, Daily Bread’s report to the police prompted an investigation by the Financial Crimes Unit. Suman Roy, the founder and CEO of Feed Scarborough, denied any wrongdoing and expressed confidence that the allegations would be disproven once the ongoing investigation concludes.

Despite Feed Scarborough’s assurance of providing documentation to address the irregularities, access to these records was later denied, prompting further scrutiny. Toronto police confirmed receiving a report from Daily Bread in November 2025 regarding Feed Scarborough and are actively investigating the matter.

Roy maintained that Feed Scarborough acted in good faith and reiterated the charity’s commitment to using all funds and resources for charitable purposes. The charity plans to sustain at least one independent food bank to continue serving the community’s needs.

Clifford Gomes, chair of Feed Scarborough’s board, affirmed the continuation of emergency food programs and emphasized their efforts to address the accusations raised by Daily Bread. The ongoing investigations and responses from involved parties shed light on the importance of maintaining transparency and integrity within charitable organizations.
