Tennessee plans to change the name of Nashville International Airport to honor the legendary country music star Dolly Parton following her recent passing at the age of 80. The decision was influenced by a social media campaign initiated by fans to pay tribute to Parton after her demise. Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee engaged with Parton’s team regarding this alteration, as confirmed by statements from the airport and Lee’s office.
Governor Lee emphasized that Dolly Parton’s remarkable life is deeply intertwined with the essence of Tennessee. He stated that it is appropriate for Nashville International Airport, a place where Tennessee embraces visitors from around the world, to bear the name of the state’s beloved daughter, reflecting the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness.
The proposal to rename the airport and any potential adjustments to the current Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority’s naming policy will be discussed at a meeting on September 17. Presently, the policy prohibits naming any property after an individual who has been deceased for less than two years, as reported by The New York Times.
The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development is in favor of this change. Commissioner Mark Ezell described Dolly Parton as an integral figure in promoting Tennessee tourism, highlighting her role as a leading ambassador for the state. The airport, where countless Tennessee journeys commence, is deemed a fitting place to commemorate the impact of Dolly Parton on the state’s culture and hospitality.
Dolly Parton, born on January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tenn., spent her early years in a modest one-room cabin in Locust Ridge. She began her music career at the age of 13 on the Grand Ole Opry stage in Nashville and later relocated to Nashville to pursue her passion. With iconic hits like “Coat of Many Colors,” “Jolene,” and “I Will Always Love You,” Dolly Parton emerged as one of the top-selling female artists, selling over 100 million records. Her exceptional talent earned her 11 Grammy Awards, including a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
