“Elizabeth Hosking Makes History with First Canadian Win in Women’s Snowboard World Cup”

Elizabeth Hosking made history by becoming the first Canadian snowboarder to claim victory in a women’s World Cup halfpipe event on Canadian soil. The 24-year-old athlete from Longueuil, Quebec, achieved her debut World Cup win with a score of 82.5 points on her initial run during the competition at WinSport’s superpipe in Calgary.

Expressing her excitement, Hosking described the win as “insane” and highlighted the significance of achieving this milestone on home turf. Despite a fall on her second run, Hosking’s initial score secured her the win, leading to a jubilant celebration as she realized her achievement.

Reflecting on her journey, Hosking acknowledged the challenges she faced, including a concussion that sidelined her for a season in 2023. Determined to build confidence for the upcoming Olympics in Milan and Turin, Italy, Hosking remains focused on refining her skills and embracing her unique style in the competitive snowboarding landscape.

In the men’s halfpipe competition, Australia’s Valentino Guseli emerged victorious, followed by David Habluetzel of Switzerland in second place and Patrick Burgener of Brazil in third. The absence of Canadian male finalists contrasted with the success of Hosking and her fellow Canadian female competitors in the event.

The World Cup event in Calgary marked a significant juncture, with Japan’s longstanding streak of 30 consecutive men’s podium finishes in the halfpipe coming to an end. As the snowboarding season progresses, athletes like Hosking continue to prepare for the challenges ahead, aiming to showcase their skills on the global stage.
