Environment Canada warns of ‘significant’ rainfall in Hamilton and Niagara area

Must read

A rainfall warning is in effect for the Hamilton and Niagara area Sunday.

Environment Canada warns “significant” rainfall is expected throughout the day in Hamilton, Burlington, Brantford, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland, and elsewhere in the region.

“The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb rainfall,” the federal weather agency says on its website.

“Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.”

Rivers, creeks and culverts have the potential to “washout” and people are advised to keep children and pets away from banks, Environment Canada says. Roads may also experience “ponding of water.”

About 20 to 30 millimetres of rain is expected, ending Sunday night.

Hamilton and Burlington were also under a fog advisory with Environment Canada warning of “near zero visibility” in the morning. It cleared by 12 p.m.
