EU Member Karlsbro Urges Tough Response to Trump’s Greenland Moves

European Parliament member Karin Karlsbro emphasizes the need for decisive actions over mere words when handling U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent controversial moves. Trump’s push to assert control over Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark, has been met with strong opposition from its citizens and Denmark itself, a close NATO ally.

In response to Trump’s threats, he announced a 10% tariff on EU countries, including Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Britain, and Norway. The EU is now considering retaliatory measures, including the potential use of the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), dubbed the “trade bazooka.” This tool could limit various trade activities and services as a response to the U.S.’s coercive tactics.

While some EU members are divided on utilizing the trade bazooka, Karlsbro advocates for a firm stance against Trump’s actions. The proposed approach aims to send a clear message to the U.S. that economic threats against any EU nation will be seen as an attack on the entire union, triggering joint retaliatory actions. This strategy mirrors NATO’s Article 5 principle of collective defense.

Despite differing opinions within the EU, Karlsbro believes that a united front is achievable given the widespread support for Denmark and Greenland globally. The potential impact of the trade bazooka on the U.S. economy could target sensitive sectors, emphasizing the EU’s readiness to take action.

In the face of escalating tensions, Karlsbro stresses the importance of proactive measures to prevent further escalation. By standing firm and employing the trade bazooka, the EU aims to discourage coercive tactics and maintain the global order without resorting to forceful territorial changes.
