Foster Malleck continues to demonstrate his competitive prowess among elite runners globally. The Kitchener, Ont., native secured the fifth spot in the men’s 2,000m at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. Malleck’s remarkable time of four minutes 54.08 seconds surpassed Cam Levins’s Canadian indoor best from 2014, although Athletics Canada does not consider this distance for record purposes.
Hobbs Kessler of the United States clinched victory in the event with a time of 4:48.79, setting a new world record, while Grant Fisher, a Calgary-born athlete, finished closely behind in 4:49.48. Jake Wightman from Great Britain, the outdoor 1,500 winner at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, secured the fourth position with a time of 4:53.69.
Expressing his satisfaction with his performance, Malleck, aged 24, shared his aspirations to reach the level of success achieved by Kessler and Fisher. Malleck’s recent achievements include a notable performance in the 4×2 km relay at the world cross-country championships, where he finished in 5:19, closely trailing the leading runner. Additionally, his impressive outdoor performance in the 1,500 at La Classique de Montréal earned him a spot on Canada’s world championship team, placing him as the second-fastest Canadian in the distance.
Despite facing challenges like a fall during a world semifinal heat, Malleck’s determination remains unwavering. His exceptional performances led him to secure the gold in the 1,500 at the NACAC Championships. A former Boston University standout, Malleck holds indoor records in the 1,609m mile and 3,000, and he recently turned professional by signing with Under Armour Mission Run Baltimore Distance.
Looking ahead, Malleck is set to compete at the John Terrier Classic, aiming to meet the qualifying standard for the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Kujawy Pomorze, Poland. His personal best for the indoor 1,500 stands at 3:38.16, achieved in the DMR Challenge hosted by BU in February 2025.
In a parallel accomplishment, American athlete Josh Hoey made headlines by breaking the men’s 800-metre short-track world record with a remarkable time of 1:42.50 seconds, surpassing a record that stood for over 28 years. Hoey’s outstanding indoor season included setting a world 600 short-track best in Boston, further solidifying his position as a top performer in track and field.
Hoey’s victory was facilitated by his strategic pacing, led by his brother Jaxson, which propelled him to a significant lead and ultimately secured his triumph.
