Last Monday, Nathan Curry’s trip to the mall took a terrifying turn when the Fredericton city bus he was travelling on overturned during a freezing-rain storm. According to Curry, the bus driver attempted to navigate around a stationary vehicle on the icy road, causing the bus’s rear end to slide. The situation escalated when the bus collided with a telephone pole, shattering windows and sending passengers on one side of the bus crashing into the broken glass.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. in the Hilton Road area, off Wilsey Road, as reported by Fredericton police. Seven individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital. On the same day, the city experienced approximately 11 other weather-related accidents, with New Brunswick RCMP recording 58 collision reports within their jurisdiction between noon on Dec. 29 and the following morning.
Curry recounted his experience of anticipating the crash and bracing for impact as the bus veered out of control. Following the collision, he observed the injured passengers in need of assistance, prompting him to locate a first aid kit. Fortunately, emergency services arrived promptly to provide aid to the injured individuals. Reflecting on the event, Curry acknowledged the challenging road conditions due to freezing rain and refrained from attributing blame to anyone.
After confirming he was unharmed, Curry decided to walk home, which was a short distance away from the crash site. He remarked on the unexpected turn of events, transforming what was meant to be a brief outing into a chaotic ordeal. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with Fredericton Transit emphasizing the seriousness of such accidents. The city has expressed willingness to discuss the matter once the investigation concludes, ensuring the safety of transit services during adverse weather conditions.
Despite the significant damage sustained by the bus, transit operations were not disrupted, and service continued as scheduled. Fredericton Transit is closely monitoring winter weather conditions and assessing service interruptions on a case-by-case basis to prioritize passenger safety. The investigation into the crash remains a priority for transit authorities, who are committed to implementing necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
