“Government Allocates $412.9M to Renew Pacific Salmon Strategy”

The government has allocated $412.9 million for the Pacific Salmon Strategy renewal project, aiming to safeguard and enhance wild salmon populations. Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson highlighted the success of the initial five-year phase, emphasizing collaborative efforts in restoring habitats, expanding hatchery programs, enhancing management practices, and ensuring the protection of vulnerable stocks.

Thompson stressed that despite progress, significant challenges persist for wild Pacific salmon. The updated strategy underscores a commitment to a new phase focused on scientific principles, Indigenous leadership, and collective responsibility for salmon preservation for future generations.

British Columbia’s environmental groups have welcomed the funding announcement while urging effective utilization for on-the-ground assessments to mitigate risks, particularly from potentially harmful industrial projects. Concerns were raised about the impact of pollutant-intensive developments on wild salmon populations.

Aaron Hill, Executive Director of Watershed Watch Salmon Society, expressed apprehension over potential budget cuts at the Fisheries Department, especially amidst rising pollution threats. He emphasized the importance of maintaining essential programs like stock assessment and advancing selective fishing practices to support sustainable fisheries.

According to federal reports, 24 wild Pacific salmon populations are classified as endangered, 10 as threatened, and nine as of special concern. Misty MacDuffee from the Raincoast Conservation Foundation highlighted the importance of selective fisheries to prevent endangering wild salmon stocks through mixed fishing practices.

The Pacific Salmon Strategy, initiated in 2021, fosters collaboration among the B.C. and Yukon governments, Indigenous communities, harvesters, scientists, environmental groups, and coastal communities to restore habitats, combat illegal fishing activities, and upgrade over 70 hatcheries.

The government’s commitment to the Pacific Salmon Strategy renewal underscores the ongoing efforts to safeguard and revitalize wild salmon populations through strategic partnerships and sustainable practices.
